Left 4 Dead is a cooperative first-person shooter video game. It was developed by Turtle Rock Studios, which was purchased by Valve Corporation during development. The game uses Valve’s proprietary Source engine, and is available for Windows and the Xbox 360.
Set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic, the game pits its four protagonists—dubbed “the Survivors”—against hordes of the infected. How to get started:
Install the game, unpack the update and copy it into the game folder. Yes, overwrite anything.
Set the following files to read only

“%installdir%\config\MasterServers.vdf”
“%installdir%\\bin\config\MasterServers.vd”

Starting the game with WINDOWS 7

Go to compatibility mode and choose “run this program as an administrator’. (Thank you, tmakonde!)

How to join a LAN-Server

Simple:
If the server is running simply open the serverbrowser (F4) and choose your game. Hit refresh if you can’t find it.

Advanced:
type the servers ip with the command “connect” in the console. For example: “connect 172.0.0.1″

How to change your name
You start as “unnamed” everytime you start the game. You can change it for good by editing the rev.ini in the left4dead folder and look for the entry “Playername=unnamed” and change it. Or you type “name mynickname” into the console. Note: This is just temporarily!

Using custom maps

Copy*.vpk files (whole campaigns) into the \left4dead\addons folder. *.bsp. & *.nav files go into the \left4dead\maps folder! (Thanks again, tmakonde!)
To start, use the map command (see how to start a Lan-server) or start a new game and enter “changelevel levelname” into the console
